Call for best practices of physical activity programmes and promotion strategies for older persons in Europe

One of the objectives of the EUNAAPA network is to identify, disseminate and promote evidence-based practice in physical activity for all older people in Europe. In the former EUNAAPA project, an expert survey was held on physical activity programmes and physical activity promotion strategies for older people. The results have been published in a cross-national report by Young et al. (2008).

In order to disseminate the contents of these and other best practices across Europe, all national reports are available on this website. For some countries more detailed information is available. In addition to this, recenly an inventory has been launched within the EUNAAPA network. The objective of this inventory is to share information on (the contents of the) programmes and strategies. There fore we put out this call for successful best practices in European countries.

This initiative is carried out by the Netherlands Institute for Sport and Physical Activity (NISB) and TNO Quality of Life

What are we looking for?

To collect information about successful European programmes or promotion strategies aimed at increasing physical activity in older persons. A succesful programme/strategy/project can be defined in a wide range of possible effects such as improvement of health, high level of participation, reduction in falls, growing membership etc.

Any type of promotion activity targeted at promoting physical activity in older persons can be presented, e.g. physical activity programmes, nationwide campaings, training programmes etc. There is no restriction to settings, target groups (with the exception of (also) being targeted at older persons).

How can you participate?

If you would like to participate we would like to ask you fill out a short questionnaire for each of the successful best practices you would like to present.

In this questionnaire the following details will be asked:

  • title of the programme/strategy/project
  • age of the target group
  • approach used to promote physical activity (e.g. GP’s advice, door-to-door, fitness test, meetings, web based intervention, telephone calls, life style advice etc.)
  • evaluation results in terms of effectiveness (outcomes in participants; e.g. reduction in care) and cost-effectiveness (e.g. reduction in care)
  • starting year
  • stage of implementation (e.g. number of participants since the start, number of finished programmes)
  • the frequency (in times per week) and duration (in minutes) of separate sessions
  • duration of the total programme/strategy/project (in months)
  • key publications or documents
  • contact details: web site (preferably in English), e-mail, country.

You can enter the questionnaire here. After finishing the questionnaire you will be redirected to this page.

What will happen with your data?

If you consent, the details of the programme/strategy/project will be published on this website. For an example, look here. If wanted, a meeting will be organised to present and share best practices in physical activity promotion.
